Comics as Research: Patients’ Reading in Psychiatric Institutions Around 1900

Anna Böhler’s research at the Medical University of Vienna focused on the topic of reading practices in historical psychiatric contexts. She presents some of her findings in comic book format, a medium that lends itself to combining her research fields of literature, arts and medicine in a low-threshold, accessible way.

About the author

Anna Böhler studied History, German Literature, Arts and Medicine in Vienna. Currently she works as a resident doctor in Austria. Her Masters-level thesis at the department of medical history at the Medical University of Vienna focused on the topic of reading practices in historical psychiatric contexts. The triad of literature, arts and medicine played and plays an important role in her scientific as well as artistic research.
